Last night at Dagenham
Last night I witnessed one of the best team performances from a team in Claret and Blue.
Thinking about it I feel its down to 2 P's
Firstly I expected us to get done 5 maybe 6-0.
Why? Last year we were abysmal against Benfica and this was the same scenario ,a team that has won this European Cup Comp for the last 2 years,a team that plays in a competitive league,a team mostly aged between 21-23 years old and lastly with a crop of some of the best young Portuguese players with a good fair sprinkling of some talented Brazilian young players
Our team depleted by injuries, players out on loan,in the first team squad and a very congestive fixture list .
So with a very young side I expected the worse, how wrong was I ,they competed on every level obviously a class difference but what great organisation and the lads were very dangerous on the break which happened on numerous occasions.
It was only when I got home I thought what has made the difference. The standard of the players are the same as last year but the difference is in the management. Liam Manning is now number 1 coach,he comes across as an eloquent man with the usual jargon, he will be off in the next couple of years to Colchester or Ipswich and could be successful but the key person is Steve Potts he has organised the defensive side and this has made the difference. He obviously did this with the under 18's and now as they are coming to the next level there is definitely a new steelness to go with the flowing football which this squad are more than capable of.
The second P is Pellegrini ,he has got the young players training with the first team squad. You don't need to be a brain surgeon to realise that his style attractive football with good defending skills[Leicester game}is now working down to these younger players. Also as importantly he has created a footpath for these youngsters ,if you are good enough you will get a chance to play at the top level what a incentive.
Without blowing my own trumpet but on the 28/9/2016 I watched for the first time a 17 year old Declan Rice and stated he will be one of the best players we have produced for a very long time. Not only has that happened it is a fantastic carrot for our existing youngsters but maybe encourage other talented youngsters to our club knowing they have chance to get on the big stage.
I am going to stick my neck out again , tonight we saw another emerging talent Manny Longelo, watch his goal, very cool,he came on against Swansea and made an impression, last night he was dangerous the whole game.
As a postscript we played Swansea off the pich,4-0 up in 60 minutes took 3 experienced players off they scored 3 goals in no time but when we scored our fifth I was amazed by the outpouring of joy not just from the players on the pitch but from every single person on our bench.
Tonight when we scored the second watch the celebration, you will see the whole squad watching from the stands come down to pitch side and celebrate with Hector-Ingram.I think good things are happening at our club

I keep hearing very good things about young Alfie Lewis in midfield....we seem to have some talented youngsters in the U23's at the moment.

Nice write up, cheers 'RAMA .

Oxford was probably out at a restaurant still feasting out on "that" game that happened almost 3 and a half years ago.

Re: LAST NIGHT AT DAGENHAM
Thanks for that Rama.
They did that without Alese,Oxford,Kemp and Makasi.
Interesting to see where they were.
Not sure if all of them were elevated to the first team training . Don't think any of them are ready for the match day squad/bench for tonight. Oxford should be, but in the games that I have seen (only the highlights, mind ) he doesn't seem to busting a gut to help out the U23's beleaguered defence. He may be playing below his level at times but he attitude seems to negative, maybe he's changed lately,he's missing a great chance.I hope he makes the bench tonight . We could do with him capturing his earlier promise.

Yoive jumped the gun on Rice though, he's got a lot to do before then.

Re: LAST NIGHT AT DAGENHAM
Glad that Steve Potts is making his mark on the club. Vastly underrated as a player, but was an intelligent defender and calm under pressure.
Seems like he's passing all that he learned under John Lyall onto the next generation. Long may it continue.

Come on, you can say the dirty words.

TERRY WESTLEY

A marked change in our youth set up since he was appointed. And fuck me, did it need a shake up.
